At one of the largest and most influential trade shows for photography, Photo Marketing Association 2008, Sigma Corporation announced the DP1, a highly-anticipated compact camera with a sensor the size and resolution used typically in a single-lens-reflex camera. Using an unconventional sensor design by Foveon, the camera senses all colors at all positions, unlike all other cameras, which use color filter arrays and thus must use a blur filter spanning adjacent complementary color pixels to prevent aliasing.
Foveon was founded by Carver Mead, a prominent professor emeritus of electrical engineering at Caltech and considered the father of modern VLSI circuit design.
